The Corky Sherwood-ization of the News

Lately I’ve been watching Murphy Brown reruns on Encore Classic and laughing my butt off. In one episode the network decides to give fluff reporter Corky Sherwood her own show. Before it even airs a critic writes a mocking review in anticipation of Sherwood asking guests Gary Collins and Mary Ann Mobley something to the effect of, “If you could be a salad dressing, what kind would you be?” While the commentary upsets Sherwood – played so endearingly ditzy by Faith Ford — she ultimately winds up lamenting that now she can’t use that question. Oh, how perfectly Corky...

Are Gratuitous Potshots Considered Kind?

In a recent article on The Huffington Post called “How to Get Flat Abs, Have Amazing Sex and Rule the World in 8 Easy Steps,” Kate Bartolotta writes compellingly under this provocative headline about what’s important in life. It’s a good read. Among my favorites – ‘let people in’ and ‘practice gratitude.’ But the writer (or maybe more like the keen-eyed editor) who lives within me stopped short on one line in the second step, which encourages us to ‘Be happy now.’ “Not because of some shiny happy Oprah crap,” Bartolotta writes.   My Unfettered Advice: Your work is...

(Ongoing) Blurred Lines

Surely Robin Thicke never imagined being foam-fingered by Miley Cyrus. And maybe I’m projecting, but while that very thing was happening on the Video Music Awards he seemed a reluctant participant as his female aggressor was bringing it. Nothing blurry about that line. If Thicke was telling the truth to Howard Stern in a recent interview – and I believe he was – he’s been with the same woman since age 14 and they have an active sex life. He revealed just enough, kept just enough private. In other words, he came off as having a healthy sexuality. Ironic,...
